Winter bugs are here — and if your little one has come down with something, sleep can quickly become a challenge.
The good news? There are ways to support your baby or toddler’s sleep during illness, without stress or pressure. Whether it’s a cold, fever, or just a few extra unsettled days, these gentle tips will help you care for their sleep (and your own peace of mind).
1. Comfort Comes First
When your little one is unwell, they’re likely to need more comfort and closeness — and that’s completely okay. This might look like extra cuddles, pats, contact naps, or just being nearby while they rest.
You might be worried this will create habits, but rest assured: comforting your baby while they’re sick won’t undo all your hard work. Once they’re well again, you can return to your normal routine — and I’ll be here to support you if you need help with that transition.
2. Extra Feeds and Fluids Are Normal
Sick babies often want more milk or water — both during the day and overnight. This helps keep them hydrated and also provides comfort while they’re feeling off. Don’t be surprised if your feeding pattern changes temporarily — go with what feels right for your child.
3. Expect More Daytime Sleep
Sleep is one of the best ways our little ones recover. During illness, it’s completely normal for babies and toddlers to:
Nap for longer stretches
Need naps more frequently
Have an earlier bedtime
Follow their lead and don’t stress about the schedule. Their little body knows what it needs right now — and that’s rest.
4. More Night Waking Is Common
Extra night waking is very common during illness. Your child might wake for comfort, a feed, or because they’re feeling uncomfortable. Try to respond calmly and supportively — this stage won’t last forever.
You’re not doing anything wrong, and your child isn’t “regressing” — they’re just needing a bit more help right now.
5. Returning to Routine After Illness
Once your child is feeling better, you can start gently returning to your usual sleep routine. The first few days and nights might be a little unsettled — that’s normal.
Stick with the same settling techniques and routine you were using before they got sick. With a little consistency, most babies and toddlers bounce back within a few days.
You’ve Got This
If your little one is unwell right now, know that you’re doing an amazing job. These moments can be exhausting — but they are temporary.
And remember, you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here to support you through all of it — the good naps, the tough nights, and everything in between.
