Have you heard of the 4-month regression?

The 4-month sleep regression is when you baby’s sleep cycles change. They go through a developmental milestone and they now have more defined sleep cycles. During the day their sleep cycle will be around 40 minutes and overnight it will be every 2-3 hours.

All baby’s handle this sleep regression differently. Some babies will have a few nights where they wake more overnight, then back to normal. Some babies will start cat napping during the day only sleeping for 40 minutes at a time. Some will start waking every 2-3 hours overnight. This can be a pattern that will stick around. And while this is called the 4 month regression it can actually start as early as 10 weeks.

A few tips to help with the 4-month regression:

  • Resettle if they wake early from a nap, to help them learn to link their sleep cycle. Cat napping is very common during the 4 month regression.
  • Ensure the room is dark, like black out dark. You can read more about how to make your child room sleep friendly here.
  • Use white noise for all sleep. White noise can help babies settle back to sleep. It is also great for blocking external noise.
